Evaluation of Module

I think what I enjoyed most about PPP this year was the opportunity to produce personal work and show that to people and have it be more apart of my studies rather than it being requirement. This way the work came naturally and i was able to reflect on the work in my own time.
I also managed to get in contact with some people in industry that i normally wouldn't have bothered to if it wasn't a mandatory requirement - this has given me a bit more confidence in approaching people.
Overall I know I have produced a lot of personal work over the course of the year, my interaction with social media such as instagram is evidence of that. However due to other modules taking more priority, this work has gone un documented on this blog.

T-shirt Design & Networking

By putting my work out on Instagram, I was approached by Betty from the Beefy Squarms collective who asked if i would like to collaborate with her to produce a t-shirt for a charity event. I accepted and this lead to me being a part of that collective.
I also went down to the event to speak with people in the hopes of meeting other artists/designers that might be interested in seeing more of my work.

Rotoscoping - Ralf Hildenbeutel - Disco

https://vimeo.com/155836252

I think this is probably the most expressive piece of rotoscoping that I have found, it also shows the level of refinement that you would be able to achieve with 3 people working on the animation. I say refinement as I feel that having the workload of a project with around 1250 frames spread between 3 people allows there to be more time spent on individual frames making the movement more fluid and defined.
This could be an idea to take into account for the collective that is being put together, to work on something that encompasses the moving image side of things.

Chasing The Shadow Of Bryn Jones - Documentary style animation

I would like to find out how this style of deconstructive animation is achieved, but by observing it and noticing that there are clear layers to the composition of the animated sections, I can make an assumption that after affects has been used to create this piece of footage.
I can then think about this idea and use it to experiment with my own  footage if I experiment with keying out certain parts of footage and separating them in to layers.
This idea may work really well in my experimentation with rotoscoping also.
I also think that this is a really good idea in terms of making reference to a subject matter, using reference imagery to create interesting effects and animation. This may be something that could possibly be useful with my dissertation.

My Dad - Marcus Armitage

I really like how this animation has been done using oil pastels. The subject matter of an impressionable young mind being influenced by what his dad says, is something that I can relate to and have seen happen.
It's these animations that are rendered in a hand made medium that really excite me and inspire new ideas of how something can be shown to move.

Online Presence - Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo

To up my online presence and engagement with the outside world - I have started to also share my work on Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo.

Online Presence - Instagram

I have started an Instagram account this year and I have tried to keep posting regularly to keep building an audience that are appreciative of the work that I am producing.
From making this account opportunities have come forward that wouldnt have if I had just been putting work online via facebook as I had been doing previously

Emerging Interests - Poetry and Visual References

I have been recently getting back into writing poetry and spoken word stuff, what I've also been doing is drawing images that relate to the little stories I'm trying to tell through my poetry. I think this is relative to my animation practice in that I could take what I've written and turn them into short animations if i collated the Images and poetry together.

Leeds Student Radio - Showcasing/ Talking About Work

I made an appearance on the Leeds student radio to talk about my work and promote the work of others locally who I have respect for.

I think doing something like this is helpful to my growth as an artist in terms of having the confidence to talk on the radio about my work. I found it enjoyable once the initial pressure of having to fill the silence because your on the radio wore off, and the conversation flowed more naturally.

I think getting involved further in things like this will help me to expand my horizons and possibly open me up to opportunities that I might not normally pick up on.

Possible Idea For Collective Project

An Idea that I had that I thought might work well as a collective project was to produce a zine that showcased some of our artwork and a little bit of information about ourselves that would bring the audience in a little more and make them understand why we produce the things we do.

It is only an initial Idea and something that may be put on hold until the summer, but I wanted to also include some photography and poetry as well as the artwork and curate it in such a way that the visuals and poetry form a narrative, another way in which I want explore animation.

And in this instance the photography would be on 35mm film.

Reflection - After Responsive & What Learnt

For me the responsive module has helped me most identify where my future interests lie in terms of what I want to pursue creatively. For example in one of the briefs I had my first experience with roto scoping which I found very enjoyable and I was proud of the results that I achieved. This process is something that I want to experiment with further over the summer holidays - with the aim of pushing what I can do with the process to find the limits of it and refine aspects that I think need improving. I will also look into using different medias for this process also.

Ultimately I think what responsive has taught me is that I do my best work when I am fully enjoying the work, I also have more pride in the finished article when I have enjoyed working on a project - so from this insight i think it best for me to really think carefully about the work that I take on.

Speaking To Cyriak

Above are screenshots of my conversation with Cyriak, I found his advice to be very assuring.

MAF - highlights

At the Manchester animation festival what I found most enriching from watching all of the different types of film was the independent films and shorts that were showcased, one that stuck out for me the most was a film by Michelle and Uri Kranot - 'How Long, Not Long.'.

The reason that this film was the highlight for me was the use of media and subject matter - what seemed to be archive footage rotoscoped with oil paint on glass.

This really jumped out for me and I think the reason being was that it was an example of independent filmakers/artists creating work for themselves but having it showcased at various locations - this kind of thing inspires me and gives me a sense of hope that I can produce my own work, make a living from it- and have it be noticed - but not without going out and showing it to people.
